The octopus’s name is Marcellus and he lives in the aquarium where Tova works. I know, right? That’s kind of what I was thinking, too. Tova does not believe her son would have done such a thing, and now some 30 years after her son’s death she still hasn’t found closure. How their son died has always been a mystery because his body was never found, but after the sailboat he had taken was discovered adrift, the police concluded that it was suicide. Her husband had died of cancer several years ago and before that they lost their only child, a son, when he was 18. She likes things neat and orderly, and it keeps her busy. She cleans the aquarium at the end of the day. Goodness.Īnyway, the story is about an old woman named Tova who works at an aquarium in Puget Sound. Well, my friends, just because I love octopuses doesn’t mean I know of every single octopus thing out there. You might be wondering why I didn’t already own it. This was also my official summer beach read which made it even more spectacular. So when my sister loaned me her copy of Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt, I had to read it right away. If you know me, you know I love octopuses. To set the mood for the evening’s concert a pre-concert performance took place in the lobby of a young classical guitarist who was really rather good. The programme worked as a whole, but didn’t carry a Spanish theme. With the evening’s theme entitled “Y Viva Espana!”, it was surprising that only two of the four composer’s works in the concert programme were Spanish. He didn’t use a score and, as a result, the music came more naturally to him enabling him to really communicate with the orchestra without the obstacle of a score. As chief conductor of the Brussels Philharmonic for the last few years, Tabachnik gave a fantastic visual display of the music and showed a strong connection with the musicians. The unusual rhythms were spot on under guidance of Swiss conductor Michel Tabachnik’s baton. The impeccably dressed Belgian Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra took to the stage at the packed Colston Hall for a sensational opening performance of Russian composer Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances. Yehuda’s research has recently been published in the journal Biological Psychiatry. If trauma can be passed to Jews, surely the same can be said about Blacks in America. But when it comes to the trauma of Black slavery, the research conducted by Yehuda and her team seems to bring new credence to the theory of Post Traumatic Slave Disorder. Much has been written about the effect of the Holocaust on Jewish survivors and their children. Yehuda goes on to state, “It makes sense to look at this gene … If there’s a transmitted effect of trauma, it would be in a stress-related gene that shapes the way we cope with our environment.” The team focused on one region of a gene that is associated with stress hormones. It is theorized that chemical tags attach themselves to DNA and can be passed on through future generations. This phenomenon is being called “epigenetic inheritance” and is the theory that environmental influences such as stress can affect the genes of your children and possibly even grandchildren. However, his participation in the revolution in Russia prevented him from doing so. Lenin intended to compose a second part of the pamphlet to further discuss his political theories. He believed that the existing state cannot be reconstructed, but rather it "must be broken smashed", causing a revolution. Lenin argued, "The state is an organ of class rule, an organ for the oppression of one class by another". In the pamphlet, Vladimir Lenin discusses the critical need for a revolution in Russia, but also for insurrection to spread throughout the world. Lenin published the pamphlet The State and Revolution in order to display his own political theories, developed from Marxism, known as Leninism. Under his leadership, the Soviet Union became a socialist state, ruled by the Russian Communist Party. Vladimir Lenin became the leader of the Russian Republic until 1918, the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, and eventually the leader of the Soviet Union until 1924. During this time period, Russia was being run by a provisional government involving socialists in alliance with bourgeois forces. At the time of the pamphlet's completion in September 1917, the future of the Russian Revolution was uncertain after the February Revolution. The State and Revolution was written by Vladimir Lenin, a Russian communist revolutionary. We are thankful for their contributions and encourage you to make your own.
